TheSage English Dictionary and Thesaurus
During the installation process, the software gives the user the option to install TheSage English Dictionary and Thesaurus the traditional way, or to create a portable version. Creating a portable version allows the software to be copied to a USB thumb drive and be used on any machine. TheSage also comes with a one-click lookup system that we found to work quite well. Users can look up definitions via a configurable keyboard shortcut. In addition, it can be done by holding down one of the mouse keys while clicking on one of the user-modifier keys on the keyboard. Another thing we like about this software, its ability to define words in Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer. However, it is unable to do this in Windows Explorer and other browsers. Not being able to define words in other browsers outside of Internet Explorer is a huge letdown in our mind, because IE is not used by everyone. For those who are unable to pronounce some words, TheSage can repeat queried words in the correct way. Furthermore, offline support is here as well, something that is definitely needed in any dictionary software. We don’t like the color-coded sections because it took us a good while to get around it fully. Having tabs or section breaks would have been a better approach in this situation, so we hope the developers make some changes in the future where this is concerned. We like the one-click feature, but while it is good, it is also a huge problem that needs fixing. We recommend anyone who wants to use to focus first on changing the default keys because the combinations overlap with traditional OS keyboard and mouse functions. TheSage is a very good dictionary and thesaurus, but it is not integrated well with Windows, and it takes a lot of work to make certain changes.
